NAMI EDUCATION PROGRAM

Spring Family to Family Class

Are you a family member or friend of a person with a mental illness? Are you interested in learning more about their illness as well as ways to cope? If so, please join us for the upcoming Family to Family Class. The class is co-sponsored by NAMI Hillsborough and the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital. The class begins March 5 in the north Tampa area.

The Family to Family class is a FREE 13 week course taught by trained family members who have lived with this experience. It offers education and support for families and friends of people with mental illness, as well as the knowledge and skills needed to cope more effectively. If your loved one is a veteran, our new format includes a class on PTSD.

Attend with other family members and friends like you in a confidential setting
Gain insight into how mental illness affects your loved one
Take an eye-opening look into some of today's current brain research
Learn how you can become a better advocate for the treatment of your loved one
Learn about mental illness medication issues
Learn to cope with worry and stress

Topic: Mental Health Court Programs

Ms. Sanders will give an overview of services offered through the court system for persons with a mental illness and related community resources. She will explain the Mental Health Pre-trial Intervention program offered to first time felony offenders diagnosed with a mental illness, and case management services. There will be time for Q&A's at the end of the presentation

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN SERVING ON THE NAMI HILLSBOROUGH BOARD OF DIRECTORS?

The Nominating Committee is soliciting candidates to fill several vacancies on the board of directors, who will be elected at our annual membership meeting in June 2012. Board members must attend monthly board meetings, be an active member of at least one board committee and a special event committee. Board members may choose to serve on the Advocacy, Communications, Finance, Fundraising, and Program Committees. Special event committees have organized observances of Mental Illness Awareness Week, Mental Health Month activities, and community holiday parties for consumers. New board members serve one year for the first term, three years for the second term, and two years for the third term. They may serve no more than six consecutive years and may be reelected after one year off the board. Board members must be current dues-paying members of NAMI. Prior NAMI experience is not required but you must be knowledgeable of NAMI services, programs, and advocacy positions.
